I am a Harry Potter geek. Yes thats right I freely admit this. I belong to a book club and help moderate a forum devoted to these books.
So today is Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince day...woo hoo...fandom and geeks around the world are screaming Go Go Gryffindor! I had pre-ordered my book two (2) months ago and I have been assured by Barnes & Noble that it will be delievered tomorrow. I will have it read by 6:00 a.m. on Sunday.
I have been invited to Borders this evening to witness the feastivities, however, I have not been able to hire a babysitter. Quite frankly I am not sure I am ready to witness 20 and 30 somethings dressed up as Harry and Hermione. But then again that could provide for some pretty good fodder for me to write about! Oh who am I kidding, I would not betray my fellow HP geeks, I secretly own a T-shirt that says "Mishchief Managed"!

I actually find that there are more grown women than men that like harry potter. Hmmm..... I say it's like star wars for girls.
The Harry Potter books build a great fantasy world, one where good often wins over evil, and young folks have the resources they need to meet any challenge.
I can't say I've read the books, because I haven't, but I've watched the movies with my wife, and enjoyed them much to my original surprise!
They've got a very 'Lord of the Rings' flavor.. a sort of 'underworld' mere mortals are unaware of... and it feels like we're getting a 'peek' inside!
Guilty as charged. I have them all and can't wait to get them new one. =)
We're nuts about the movies, but have read none of the books. Considering we are both voracious readers, I wonder why we haven't consumed the books...

Bill: You should pick up the series it is an easy read. Books 4 and 5 are my favs. I love LOTR as well and my dad got me reading those when I was about 9. Took forever but I finished those.

This is the first HP midnight party I have missed in at least 3 books. I am so disgruntled at myself, suppose I will be at BnN at lunch securing my copy.
I agree with Trevor. I stopped in a bookstore during my ongoing travels and the female to male ratio participating in the Potter festivities was like 5:1.
My daughter is a Harry Potter geek too. Her preordered book came in the mail last Saturday and she has probably already read it by now. When the movies come out she is in line for the first performance. She does the same thing for Star Wars.
I think the Harry Potter series are great and I'm waiting for the next movie myself.

Jen, I love those books, especially from the third book on. They get better each time. I will be reading the new one soon, but I would love to hear what you have to say about it. I am a sucker for escapist fantasy.
They do get better with every novel. I usually struggle to find fantasy novels that come across as something more than the author typing out a fantastical world that truly only applies to his or herself. But when fantasy is done properly, they are the best stories of all.
I started reading it lastnight. It's quite different, but I've wondered if Rowling had ghost writers ever since book 3.
Jo has indicated many times that the whole series is written out in note form. That she has had everything planned since the beginning. Although, she has also stated that her characters sometimes take to "wandering".
I liked the book because Harry was very strong in this one. I really liked the chapters that focused on Harry and DD. Everything else seemed to stray a bit and we were presented with even more questions than answers. The series is coming to an end and I don't feel like enough of the backstory has been given to us. But then again this book was meant to be a children's series so we adults have to know when to back off.
I also think Jo was trying to provide different situations that show different kinds of love. Ultimately I think that is the theme of the books. The power of love.
