Music Videos

I grew up with music videos. I was there, glued to the TV, at my friend Kevann's house, when MTV aired for the first time. It was (insert valley girl voice) "omg, the best thing ever!" I love to watch videos and can see what the musician looks like. I always liked the videos that had dance routines, but also enjoyed the ones that showed guys belting one out.

So now that MTV does not play videos, at least while I am awake, I have taken to watching VH1 in the a.m. Well I watch when my kids don't have the Disney channel and Kim Possible on (*waves to kimmah*).

So this morning I am watching VH1 and finishing up the touches on my makeup. Then BAM Jessica Simpson pops onto the screen. When I say pop I mean POP! Whoa....I am no prude but I was a bit in shock at this new video, "These Boots Are Made For Walking". The girl is hotter than hot and I thought for a moment there I was in a nudie/exotic dancer bar. Mind you, I have not been to that type of bar so I am just making a wild guess here and my mind wondered for just a bit. I will let you think what you want about where I wondered to.

Well after I came out of that little daze I turn to see my two children in the room with me. I am in a bit of horror struck moment as my daughter asks "who is that" and I say "Jessica Simpson." My daughter replies "THAT is not Jessica Simpson!" I say "ok, maybe not, lets get going, click." For some reason my four year old son was just staring at the screen and did not say a word.

I think I filled my bad mom quota for the day. Not sure we can watch VH1 in the a.m. any longer and will most certainly have to clue hubby in on the new diversion that has become music videos.

SAME thing for me this past week! That video is nothing about the music. Vocally, it's nowhere that she usually is. It's all about promoting the movie and that's a little sad.

You know, I really like Gwen Stefani's video for "Cool", I think that's the name. She looks so different as the brunette--so simple, pure--but really pretty. And, the song is pretty good.

I love watching videos when I can sneak them in--not for my kids to watch if at all possible.:)

Take care and talk to you later.

Hiya Jen! I guess I am a bit of a prude. It's unfortunate that most videos these days is all about looking skanky and not dancing. I watched the new reality tv dance competition last night and a lot of the girls were trying to be sleazy. *sheesh*

Heh. I think I don't have kids, partly because I wouldn't know where to draw the line. I think it's funny when they swear.
Knockers<----will remain childless until she grows up herself.

P.S. I rather enjoyed the video. Probably for the same reasons that your son did though. *grin*

Marel: Who could listen to the music with all the other distractions!! lol I know naughty but I really like the song by Tina Sinatra.

Mrs. T: You know I never tried MTV in the a.m. but I am sure the veiwing fare is the same there. *sigh* I just don't get to indulge while the kiddios are up and about.

Schnookie: YAY you found me! I would have been ok with the video up to the washing the car in the bikini outfit...again WHOA!

Carey: You know you want kids babe! They keep you young and out of trouble. My boy, he is four and notices the oobies that pop out everywhere!

I think your boy might be too young for you to have to worry about it too much.

Perhaps Trevor, but I wonder...
I'm with you Jen, as much as I would have loved it when I was a kid, it is totally inappropriate for children of any age. I know that I'm 40 and starting to put my dentures in a cup, but when is it enough. I thought I had to be married to a super model growing up due to the standard put forth on television and magazines, a standard even the models weren't really living up to. And all this overt sexuality on tv is too much. I was watching the Disney Channel in the middle of the day when I saw a video of Lindsay Lohan with her new boob job, flashing cleavage and licking her finger. After I went outside for a smoke (kidding) I had to turn it off.

Yep Scott I worry about the effect it is having on my girl. She is a doll but all the pressure to be thin is nuts. We are concentrating on healthy.

The dancing...whoa boy...we will do with that later! lol

It's all the 'cycle' of things. Back in the day my parents thought the 'rock' groups like the Beatles and the Stones were 'too much'.. their parents thought Elvis was too much.

Top 40 and contemporary music is, and pretty much has been for 40 or 50 years now, intended to 'shock'.. to be out there..

The difference is, today, it's available 'live' nearly 24/7... makes ya long for the 'Ed Sullivan days" 'eh?

:)

Hi T thanks for stopping by.

Bill: I am all about a little bit of shock and pushing the limits, like I said I am no prude, but wow this video was something to see.

Geez, am I getting old? aaack!

They just need to stop using aliens in music videos.

I was watching tv and Mtv when it all began. I was there for the beginning. I remember them having so few videos, they ran what they had on a loop so you saw the same 20 videos all day long. lol

I cannot stand the direction music is going. Teenagers dressed up like whores who can't sing, but have the bodies, so who cares?

Thankfully, my children were raised with good music ... classic rock, classical, and it shows in their taste.

I just have a particular disgust towards any station targetted towards kids that looks like soft porn, but that's just me.

jenbeauty said...

YES GK...soft porn...that described this video!!

We still like Hilary Duff in our house. She seems to stay true to her persona and does not dress as bad as the rest.

Different musical tastes are important. We listen to all kinds of stuff. Hubby and I like so many different things.

My dad is such a huge fan of the 50s and 60s music my kids love the Beach Boys. My mom is a Motown freak so they know songs by the Supremes as well.

They don't seem to like anything from the 80s but love the 70s. I like about 50/50 of the newer stuff that has come out. Not above changing the station though when I hear Gwen's Holla'Back Girl...I just hate that song for some reason.

Knitter, do you remember I'm Turning Japanese, or This Little Girl is Mine, Lucy and Ramona and their brother Sunset Sam, Video Killed the Radio Star. I was there too.

jenbeauty said...

Are you kidding Scott, I thought those were the best things since rollar skates!

The first video to really make an impression on me and that I remember pretty vividly was Van Halen's "Pretty Woman". Ole Daper Dan dressed as Napoleon made me laugh.

Beth said...

Of course, Scott! "Video Killed the Radio Star" was the first video ever played and I was hooked! Remember all those British bands coming into the fold? Adam Ant, Duran Duran, and such ... I miss those kinds of videos!

I don't get any music/allegedly musically-themed video channels. This saddens me to some extent.

I think your son is definitely too young to have been significantly damaged by Jessica Simpson's proud display of her stunning physique. And just tell your daughter that she didn't see anything. It was all a dreeeeeam.

So funny! Even I was a little shocked at the "carwash" scene! I think I know how she got Willy Nelson to be in that video. You're right about MTV not showing videos anymore. To compensate, they launched MTV2, which is slowly becoming more mainstream and introducing more and more non music shows. What's next? MTV3???

I haven't seen that video yet, but it sounds like an interesting departure from her earlier persona. Wasn't Jessica Simpson the one who loudly proclaimed the benefits of downplaying sexuality, including saving sex for marriage? I thought that she positioned herself as the anti-Christina Agulera there for a while...

Regardless, I would rather watch/listen to this than anything that her sister puts out!

I wouldn't worry too much about it as it probably didn't make too much of an impression on them.

Now your husband on the other hand...I'm sure he'll thank you for bringing him into the loop on this one. :)
